What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when your body doesn’t make insulin or doesn’t use insulin correctly to convert your blood sugar into energy. There are three common types of diabetes:
Type 1
Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, occurs when your pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. Only around 5% of people who have diabetes have Type 1 diabetes. It’s usually diagnosed during childhood, although it can emerge at any age. Gestational diabetes
Some women develop gestational diabetes in the second trimester of pregnancy. The placenta produces a hormone that interferes with insulin conversion. Type 1 diabetes usually develops suddenly, causing symptoms such as:
